I went to South Africa in 2017 to represent the University of South Florida during a two-week Comparative Higher Education Study Tour organized by St. Cloud State University (SCSU) and hosted by Nelson Mandela University (NMU).
During my visit, I met with Student Affairs professionals, including administrators to learn about best practices conducive to student success. I was also invited to present about the University of South Florida's philosophy and approach to student learning through the Residential Curriculum and Living Learning Communities. But the greatest opportunity was learning from them; listening to their stories and passion for student success.
My main takeaway is that the power of higher education gives opportunities for individuals to learn, grow, and challenge status quo all around the world. And that we all have core goals: to provide a safe, welcoming, and engaging spaces for students to learn and live.
I am beyond grateful to have had this professional development experience. Thank you to Linda Kasper, Ana Hernandez, and Neudy Nuñez for mentoring and providing me this opportunity.
Here is my itinerary for this Study Tour.
St. Cloud State University offered me (and other higher education professionals) with a unique opportunity to spend two weeks in Macerata, Italy at the University of Macerata (UNIMC). Established in 1290, UNIMC is the second-oldest university in Italy and was the home base during the two-week program. In addition to taking 3 classes at UNIMC, we were involved in a 20-hour international internship, working side-by-side with Italian academics. I did an internship with the Department of Political Science, Communication, and International Relations. We also toured other Italian cities and universities, as well as regional landmarks and businesses.
As the winner of the Italian Cultural Center of Minneapolis and St. Paul Scholarship, I wrote a blog to document my experience. Daily entries and pictures can be found at https://theitalianhigheredexperience.wordpress.com/
